In season 2 episode 3 of Modern Family, entitled "Earthquake," the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan is rocked by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that strikes the Los Angeles area. The episode follows each family as they navigate the aftermath of the natural disaster.
Jay and Gloria are stranded at the grocery store, where they must use their cunning and wit to fend off other hungry shoppers and scrounge up enough food to last them until help arrives. Meanwhile, Phil and Claire are stuck in their daughter Haley's bedroom, which is the only room in the house with working cable and a TV. While they try to entertain themselves, they also try to keep their two younger children, Luke and Alex, calm and occupied as aftershocks jostle the house.
Elsewhere in the city, Mitchell and Cameron are on their way to a brunch date when the earthquake strikes. The event forces them to confront some long-buried relationship issues as they must face their fears and help each other through the turbulent experience.
As the hours pass and the aftershocks continue, tensions rise and secrets are revealed. Jay and Gloria's marriage hits a rough patch as they struggle to work together in the cramped confines of the grocery store. Phil and Claire finally address some underlying issues in their relationship as they wait out the disaster together. And Mitchell and Cameron must confront some uncomfortable truths about their past as they navigate the destruction and chaos around them.
Despite the stress and fear of the situation, the family ultimately comes together to support one another and make the best of their predicament. The episode is a reminder that, no matter what life throws your way, family is always there to lean on and help you through it.
