In the twelfth episode of the second season of Modern Family, titled "Our Children, Ourselves," each member of the Pritchett-Dunphy family is facing a different parenting challenge.
Phil Dunphy (played by Ty Burrell) is struggling with his daughter Haley's independence as she begins dating a boy he doesn't approve of. Meanwhile, his wife Claire (played by Julie Bowen) is grappling with the realization that her youngest son Luke is growing up too fast, as he begins to outsmart her in their mother-son games.
Jay Pritchett (played by Ed O'Neill) is dealing with his stepson Manny's budding sexuality and his desire to attend a dance with a girl he likes, while his own son Mitchell (played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson) is worried about his confidence in his parenting abilities after an incident at the park.
Lastly, Mitchell's partner Cameron (played by Eric Stonestreet) is trying to figure out how to teach their daughter Lily to be more assertive after noticing that she's been pushed around by other children at the playground.
Throughout the episode, the family members attempt to navigate their individual parenting challenges while also learning from each other. With plenty of heart and humor, "Our Children, Ourselves" explores the ups and downs of raising children in a modern world.
