In Modern Family season 1 episode 7, titled "En Garde," the Dunphy-Pritchett-Tucker clan is up to their usual antics. The episode begins with a classic plotline: the sibling rivalry between Claire and her brother Mitch.
Mitch, who is visiting from out of town, joins the Dunphys for a night of games. But things quickly escalate when Mitch and Claire get into a heated argument about who was the favored child growing up. Phil plays mediator, but his efforts fall short and the game night ends in a tie - with Claire and Mitch both claiming victory.
Meanwhile, Jay has taken up fencing as a hobby and invites Mitchell to join him for lessons. Mitchell eagerly agrees, but soon realizes that he's in over his head. His instructor is intimidating and he struggles to keep up with the other students, who are all much younger than he is.
Back at the Dunphy household, Gloria is dealing with her own set of problems. She's convinced that her dog Stella is depressed and enlists the help of her stepson Manny to cheer her up. Manny suggests throwing a quinceanera for the dog, complete with a dress and tiara. Gloria is hesitant at first, but eventually gives in to the idea.
The rest of the episode follows the various storylines as they intertwine and come to a head. Claire and Mitch continue their sibling rivalry, taking their argument to the streets in a mock sword fight. Meanwhile, Mitchell struggles to keep up in fencing class and Gloria and Manny prepare for Stella's big quincenera.
As always, the episode is full of laughs and heartwarming moments. We see the close bond between siblings Claire and Mitch, and the dedication of Gloria to her beloved dog. Jay and Mitchell also share a sweet moment as Jay encourages his son to keep trying in his fencing lessons.
Overall, "En Garde" is a lively and entertaining episode that showcases the talents of the ensemble cast. It's a great addition to the first season of Modern Family and sets the stage for many more hilarious moments to come.
