It's the season finale of Modern Family's first season and the family is heading to Hawaii for a vacation. The episode is appropriately titled "Airport 2010" as it follows the family's journey through the airport as they try to catch their flight.
Phil and Claire are excited for their trip and have everything carefully planned out. However, their plans quickly go awry when they discover that they won't be seated next to each other on the flight. Phil, being the devoted husband that he is, swaps seats with a stranger so he can sit with Claire. This leaves Phil stuck next to a talkative man, played by actor James Marsden, who ends up revealing some personal information about his life to Phil.
Meanwhile, Mitchell and Cameron are struggling to get their adopted daughter Lily's passport sorted out. In the midst of all the chaos at the airport, they accidentally hand over Lily's favorite stuffed animal to a random child. This results in a frantic search around the airport for the lost toy, which ultimately leads them to the airport's lost and found.
Gloria is also having a difficult time at the airport. Her fear of flying takes over and she becomes convinced that the plane is going to crash. Her husband Jay tries to calm her down, but it's no use. Eventually, the airline offers to give her a sedative which ends up making her more loopy than relaxed.
The Pritchett children also have their own adventures at the airport. Haley is preoccupied with trying to get into college and is constantly checking her e-mails for an acceptance letter while Alex is keeping herself busy with Sudoku puzzles. Luke, on the other hand, is more interested in the various mechanical moving walkways at the airport and spends most of the episode riding them.
As the family goes through security and attempts to make their flight on time, they are forced to deal with various obstacles such as slow moving lines and over-enthusiastic TSA agents. They also encounter a number of quirky and interesting characters such as a man who has to carry his snake with him on the plane and a woman who is traveling with her giant pet parrot.
"Airport 2010" is a lighthearted and entertaining episode that captures the chaos and humor that can come with air travel. The episode features some great comedic moments and showcases the unique personalities and quirks of each of the show's characters. Overall, it's a fun and fitting way to wrap up the first season of this beloved sitcom.
