Katz's Sortie is the fifteenth episode of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam's first season. The episode sees the return of Katz, who simulates pilots in Nemo Gundam to join the Titans against the AEUG. Katz is manipulated and coached by his new superiors before embarking on a mission to launch a high-risk attack on the AEUG that could have serious repercussions.
The episode begins with Roux trying to find her place within the crew of the Argama. As she stands on the bridge, she notes that everyone else seems to have a clear role to play on the ship. Katz appears, having returned from negotiating with the Titans. When he approaches the bridge, everyone is initially relieved to see him - until he announces that he has decided to switch sides and join the Titans.
Katz's defection is the result of a calculated strategy on the part of the Titans. They have been watching the mobile suits that the AEUG has been piloting and feel that they have a potential advantage by acquiring them. However, they need someone who knows how they operate to be able to accurately fight against them. That's why they have targeted Katz, offering him the opportunity to fly a Nemo Gundam if he will agree to fight on their side.
The Titans have managed to twist Katz's worldview in a variety of ways, highlighting the mistakes made by the AEUG and pointing out the fact that they are the lawful military force. They also appeal to his desire to be recognized for his skills, something that has been lacking since he began working with the AEUG.
Katz believes that he has the opportunity to prove himself by taking part in a high-risk attack against the AEUG's Argo launcher. The Titans are confident that Katz will succeed, although they have no qualms about leaving him behind if necessary. Meanwhile, Katz puts together his own team of pilots to fight alongside him. They train together and work on honing their skills, believing that they are capable of achieving the Titans' lofty ambitions.
The AEUG is aware of the Titans' plans, but they are not quite sure how to respond. They know that they are dealing with an individual who once fought on their side before, so their intentions are a bit murky. However, they decide to act anyway, launching mobile suits to defend the Argo launcher. Emma and Camille go out together in the Methuss, which proves to be a valuable asset.
Meanwhile, Katz and his team make their way toward the Argo launcher. They are spotted by the AEUG's mobile suits, but the Titans' expertise allows them to evade their pursuers and make it unscathed to their destination. Katz and his team then manage to infiltrate the launcher and steal two mobile suits, both of which are new and highly advanced.
Once back in their mobile suits, Katz and his team press their attack against the Methuss, thinking that they are due for a victory. However, their attack tactics prove to be highly predictable, and ultimately ineffective in the battle. Despite full faith in Katz's capabilities, the Titans are forced to abandon Katz and his team, leaving them to their peril and clearly signify that they are mere soldiers and the Titans won't mind sacrificing them for their mission.
With the attack ended in failure, Katz and his remaining team make their way back to the Titans' base. Katz is left to question his actions and what made him disillusioned with the AEUG in the first place, seeing the Titans for what they are. Katz's Sortie is an interesting episode that explores the psychology of Katz and the impact of war on young people.
