The Submarine is an episode from the fourth season of the classic spy TV series Mission: Impossible. The episode follows the team as they attempt to retrieve a top-secret missile guidance system from a sunken submarine before the technology falls into the wrong hands.
The episode opens with the team receiving their latest mission briefing from Dan Briggs, the leader of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF). Briggs explains that the missile guidance system was aboard a submarine that sank off the coast of Greece, and that the system is now resting on the ocean floor in a deep-sea trench. The information is top secret, and the US government has told no one about the system's existence. But Briggs warns that foreign powers are closing in on the technology, and it's only a matter of time before someone locates the sunken sub.
The team consists of Briggs, IMF agents Rollin Hand, Cinnamon Carter, Barney Collier, and Willy Armitage. Their plan is to infiltrate a private research vessel that is already searching for the sub, and use its resources to locate and retrieve the missile system. But the team soon discovers that the vessel is captained by a former IMF agent named Faraday, who left the agency under mysterious circumstances.
Faraday is immediately suspicious of the team, and it's clear that he's onto their plan. But Rollin manages to win his trust by claiming that the team is working for a wealthy client who wants to get his hands on the missile system. Faraday agrees to let the team use his equipment, and they begin their search.
The team soon discovers the sub, but there's a catch: the missile system is locked in a secret compartment that can only be accessed from inside the sub. And the sub is lying on the ocean floor at a depth of over 2,000 feet. The team realizes that they'll have to perform a risky underwater mission to retrieve the guidance system.
Barney comes up with a plan to create a makeshift submarine using an old missile casing. The casing will be modified to accommodate a crew of two, and it will be equipped with a powerful thruster that will allow it to descend to the required depth. But the makeshift sub will be highly unstable at that depth, and it will be a race against time to retrieve the missile system before the craft implodes.
Rollin and Willy are chosen for the underwater mission. They begin their descent in the makeshift sub, and their journey is fraught with danger. The sub is buffeted by strong currents, and its hull starts to buckle under the pressure. But Rollin and Willy press on, and they eventually reach the sunken sub.
Once inside the sub, Rollin and Willy locate the missile guidance system and begin the process of removing it from the secret compartment. But they soon realize that they are not alone. A foreign power has sent their own team of agents to retrieve the missile system, and they're now closing in on the sub.
Rollin and Willy hurry to finish their mission, but they're interrupted by the rival agents. A tense shootout ensues, and Willy is fatally wounded. But Rollin manages to escape with the missile system, and he makes his way back to the makeshift sub.
The episode ends with Rollin returning to the research vessel, where the team is waiting for him. Briggs is relieved to see that the mission was a success, but he's deeply saddened by the loss of Willy. The team mourns their fallen comrade, and Briggs reminds them that in their line of work, death is always a possibility.
The Submarine is a tense and action-packed episode that showcases the dangers and risks inherent in the IMF's impossible missions. The episode also deals with themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the ethics of espionage. Fans of the series will enjoy the nail-biting underwater scenes and the clever and inventive solutions that the team uses to complete their mission.
