After the controversial departure of fan-favorite characters Simon and Alisha at the end of season three, Misfits returns with a new batch of superpowered delinquents as well as some familiar faces. The first episode sets the stage for the season, introducing viewers to new protagonist Jess and setting up the overall arc of the group's struggle against the mysterious and malevolent "new probation worker".
Jess is a mouthy, confident girl who's a bit of a kleptomaniac and a lot of a screw-up. Her power is the ability to teleport, but only to a place she's previously been to before. She's recruited to community service alongside three other newbies: Finn, a sensitive boy who can see people's innermost thoughts; Alex, a chauvinistic athlete who can turn invisible; and Abby, a sheltered girl who can read minds. They're all quickly thrown into the deep end when the new probation worker (Natalie Emmanuel) shows up, imposing strict new rules and punishments on the crew.
Meanwhile, Rudy and Curtis are still around from the original cast, dealing with their own personal struggles. Rudy, always the randy one, ends up in trouble after participating in a strange (but hilarious) sexual encounter involving a group of "horny werewolves". Curtis, who's now training to become a probation worker himself, has to figure out how to use his gender-swapping power to help a teenage girl who's being abused by her father.
As ever, Misfits blends dark humor, raunchiness, and genuine pathos to craft a unique tone. The new actors are all appealing in their own ways, and it's nice to have some fresh blood injected into the show. It remains to be seen whether they'll be able to fill the shoes of Nathan, Kelly, Simon, and Alisha, but for now they're off to a promising start. The new probation worker also seems like she could be a genuinely threatening antagonist, which is exciting. Misfits is back, baby!
