In MINDHUNTER season 2 episode 1, our beloved FBI agent Holden Ford, portrayed by Jonathan Groff, is back on screen with his partner Bill Tench, portrayed by Holt McCallany, to solve more serial killer cases. They are joined by Wendy Carr, portrayed by Anna Torv, who is a psychologist that studies the behavior of these killers.

This episode revolves around the Atlanta child murders, which took place between 1979 and 1981. During this period, over 25 African American children, adolescents, and adults were killed. This episode is set in 1980, and the trio of FBI agents is sent to Atlanta to help solve this case.

As they arrive in Atlanta, we can immediately sense the racial tension. The Atlanta Police Department is under intense scrutiny from the press and the public for their inability to solve these murders. The police department is underfunded and understaffed, which is adding to the problem. As Holden, Bill, and Wendy start working with the police department, they feel the resentment and hostility of the locals. They are not welcomed, and their presence is seen as unnecessary interference in a case that the police department is struggling to solve.

While getting to know the Atlanta Police Department, the trio realizes that the police are focused on capturing a white man who they believe is responsible for these murders. Holden, Bill, and Wendy are not convinced that it is a white man responsible for these deaths, but instead, they think it could be a member of the black community.

The trio is shown interviewing several community leaders and members of the black community. As they listen to their stories, it becomes clear to Holden and the others that they need to study the behavior of the killer to understand who he is. They feel that the killings are not random and that there must be a pattern to his behavior. They start talking to families of the victims to understand more about the killer's modus operandi, and they start building a system to record the data of the victims.

Towards the end of the episode, they study the patterns of the killer and create a profile for the killer. They believe that the killer is smart and is probably a man who lives in the area. They also believe that he is part of the black community and possibly a former convict who has a history of violence.

As the episode ends, Holden, Bill, and Wendy's efforts seem to be paid off. They are getting closer to solving this case, and their efforts are praised by the police department. The trio has shown that their skills and expertise can be instrumental in solving difficult cases, and they are here to help the Atlanta police department at every step.
