When a postal employee is found dead in the woods, Detective Barnaby and his partner investigate what appears to be a tragic accident only to discover it was a murder. The investigation reveals that the victim, Greg Tutt, was on a personal mission to deliver lost letters to their intended recipients in the village of Dunstan. Their investigation is complicated due to the victim’s rash behavior prior to his death and his personal vendettas with several residents of the village.
As the two detectives attempt to track down suspects and piece together the victim's last moments on Earth, they begin to unravel a series of grudges and vendettas swirling around the deceased’s involvement with lost letters. Gradually, Barnaby and his partner discover that Tutt's work with the lost letters had allowed him to discover various secrets of the Dunstan residents, and that they stop at nothing to keep them hidden.
As they dive deep into the individuals associated with Tutt and his work, Barnaby and his partner identify several primary suspects in their investigation, including a former love interest, a vindictive delivery worker, and an enigmatic woman who works a business from her lavender farm. As the plot thickens, the detectives learn that each suspect has motives to take out their victim and that there may be more to Tutt's death than merely the lost letters.
The investigation leads the detectives on a winding path of suspicion, with each suspect holding their dark secrets close to the vest. Even when they get close to solving the case, new pieces of evidence, and suspects are revealed, leaving audiences at the edge of their seats. Will the diligent duo unravel the mystery in time to find the culprit before another death rocks the small village of Dunstan? You'll have to watch "Midsomer Murders" season 9 episode 2, "Dead Letters," to find out.
