In the small and picturesque village of Midsomer, the sudden death of a renowned artist, Nancy Dewar, sets the stage for yet another intriguing episode of Midsomer Murders. DCI Barnaby and Sergeant Troy are called in to investigate what appears to be a suicide, but as they begin to dig deeper, they realize that there is more to the case than meets the eye.
Nancy's husband, Max, is understandably distraught over the loss of his wife and is convinced that she could never have taken her own life. However, as the detectives begin to conduct interviews and piece together the events leading up to Nancy's death, they begin to uncover a web of secrets and lies, some of which go back many years.
The first clue is a mysterious message left on Nancy's answering machine from her former lover, Rupert Smythe, who is now a wealthy businessman. As Barnaby and Troy delve deeper into Nancy's past, they discover that she had been entangled in a complex love triangle involving Rupert and a third party.
Meanwhile, a number of other suspects emerge, each with their own motives and alibis. Nancy's neighbour, who is in financial trouble, could have had a hand in her death, as could her assistant, who harbours a grudge against her.
As the investigation progresses, the detectives must also navigate a difficult political situation, as the victim was a high-profile member of the local council, and her sudden death threatens to derail a major development project in the area.
The tension builds as the detectives close in on the killer, and the suspects become increasingly desperate to keep their secrets hidden. The final scene is a thrilling climax, as Barnaby and Troy race against time to catch the murderer before they strike again.
