In the Midsomer village of Midsomer Mallow, the annual Wild West fair is underway. A group of enthusiasts, dressed in cowboy attire, are busy playing a game of 'Cowboys and Indians' when they come across the body of a man, stabbed to death.
The victim is identified as Robert Cavendish, a local farmer and the father of a young girl, Sarah. As the investigation gets underway, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby and Detective Sergeant Gavin Troy discover that there are several suspects with motive to kill Robert.
Whilst investigating the case, Barnaby and Troy meet a number of eccentric characters, including a group of animal rights activists who are protesting against a local farmer for keeping his animals in cramped conditions. They also discover that Robert was a womaniser and had a number of affairs with local women, including Dinah Curwin, a well-known artist in the area, and Paddy Gowers, a local barmaid.
As they delve deeper into the case, Barnaby and Troy discover that Robert's brother, William, had previously stolen from him and that the two had a turbulent relationship. They also find out that Sarah had been kidnapped and held to ransom just a few months earlier and that her father had paid the ransom in order to secure her safe return. It soon becomes clear that Robert's murder could be linked to this previous kidnapping.
As the investigation progresses, Barnaby and Troy find themselves in danger as they get closer to the truth. However, with their detective skills and bravery, they are able to solve the case and bring the killer to justice.
