As the investigation progresses, a series of cryptic clues suggest that the treasure may have a deeper, darker significance than anyone had anticipated. Suspects include the leader of the excavation team, the local landowner who owns the burial site, and a group of black metal enthusiasts who have been seen lurking in the area.
Meanwhile, Barnaby's wife Joyce becomes involved in the case when she volunteers to help with the excavation and starts to uncover some startling secrets of her own.
