In the small, picturesque village of Midsomer Malham, the annual wild boar hunt is taking place. However, the festivities come to an abrupt halt when the body of a member of the hunting party is found stabbed to death with a sword in the woods.
DCI John Barnaby and DS Ben Jones are called in to investigate the murder, and soon realize that they are dealing with a case that spans back several decades. The sword used to kill the victim is identified as the Sword of Guillaume, which was stolen from the local museum 30 years ago and has been missing ever since.
As Barnaby and Jones delve deeper into the case, they discover that the victim, Henry Charlton, had been involved in a bitter feud with several members of the local community, including his own family members. His sister, Abigail, and her husband, Hugo, appear to have had a particularly heated argument with Henry on the day of his death.
Meanwhile, Barnaby's wife, Sarah, appears to be getting drawn into the case herself. As the local museum curator, she has a personal interest in the missing Sword of Guillaume, and starts to investigate the theft on her own. Her line of inquiry brings her into contact with an eccentric retired history teacher, Nigel; a flirtatious antique dealer, Carolyn; and the wealthy and influential DeQuettevilles, who were the owners of the sword before it was stolen.
As the investigation continues, Barnaby and Jones begin to piece together a complex web of secrets and lies, and realize that the murder of Henry Charlton may have been part of a larger plot to recover the missing sword. With tensions running high in the village and suspects seemingly at every turn, Barnaby and Jones must work quickly to find the killer before they strike again.
With its picturesque English countryside setting and intricate mystery, "The Sword of Guillaume" is a classic episode of Midsomer Murders that will keep viewers guessing until the very end.
