In season 12 episode 5 of Midsomer Murders titled Small Mercies, the detectives investigate a murder case that takes place during an annual race for vintage cars in the picturesque village of Ingledew. What seems like a simple case of a car crashing off the road turns into a murder investigation when one of the drivers, a wealthy businessman, is found dead with the steering wheel removed from his vintage car.
DCI John Barnaby is called in to investigate the case with his sidekick, DS Ben Jones. The victim, Richard Tanner, was a well-known businessman and widely despised for his dishonest business practices. Therefore, there is no shortage of suspects for the detectives, including the other race competitors, Tanner's ex-wife, and even his own son.
As Barnaby and Jones delve deeper into the investigation, they discover that Tanner had a reputation for cheating and used his business dealings to swindle people out of their money. They also learn that Tanner had been involved in a car accident years ago that left his girlfriend paralyzed and that she still held a grudge against him.
Meanwhile, Jones finds himself drawn to one of the race enthusiasts, Alice Blyth, who is also the girlfriend of one of the prime suspects, Richard's son, Tim Tanner. Their relationship becomes complicated when Jones discovers some unsettling facts about Alice's past.
As the detectives try to piece together the clues, they uncover a web of lies and deception that stretches far beyond the vintage car race. With time running out, Barnaby and Jones must work quickly to uncover the truth before the killer strikes again.
