As they begin to investigate, Barnaby and Jones learn that King's business dealings were not all ethically sound. He was involved in a number of questionable practices, including bribery and blackmail, and had made enemies out of many of the people in town.
The detectives soon discover that King was planning to sell a crystal-making company owned by his family for generations. The potential buyers are eager to get their hands on the valuable business, but questions arise as to whether foul play was involved in the negotiations.
