Ep 5. Out Where the Buses Don't Run
- TV14
- October 18, 1985
As the episode begins, we see Crockett and Tubbs investigating the murder of a drug dealer in an abandoned building. This is just one of many similar crimes in the area, and Crockett is frustrated with the lack of progress in their investigation. His mood isn't helped by the fact that he's also dealing with personal issues - his ex-girlfriend, Caroline, has returned to Miami and wants to reconcile, but Crockett isn't sure if he's ready for that.
Meanwhile, a man named Izzy Moreno approaches Crockett and Tubbs with a proposition. Izzy is a former drug dealer who has served his time in prison and is now trying to turn his life around. He's heard that the police are having trouble locating a drug lord named Esteban, and he thinks he can help. Izzy has a theory that Esteban is hiding out in a place called the "underground," an area of Miami that's only accessible by boat. Crockett and Tubbs are skeptical, but they decide to give Izzy a chance.
Izzy takes the detectives to the waterfront, where he introduces them to an eccentric boat captain named Lou Rodriguez. Lou agrees to take them to the underground, but warns them it's a dangerous place and they'll need to be careful. As they make their way down the river, Lou tells them stories about the area - how it used to be a thriving part of Miami, but now it's mostly abandoned and overrun by drug dealers and other criminals.
Eventually, they reach the edge of the underground, where Lou drops them off and tells them he'll come back to pick them up in a few hours. Crockett and Tubbs search the area, but they don't find any sign of Esteban. They do, however, come across a woman named Valerie Gordon. Valerie is a drug addict who lives in the underground, and she tells Crockett and Tubbs that Esteban is long gone - he left the area months ago. Valerie is convinced that he's dead, but she can't prove it.
Crockett and Tubbs are about to give up when they hear gunshots in the distance. They follow the sound and come across a deserted bus station. Inside, they find a man named Hank Weldon, who claims to be a former friend of Izzy's. Hank tells them that Esteban is indeed dead - he was killed by one of his own men, a man named Angelina. Angelina is now in charge of the drug operation, and she's even more dangerous than Esteban was.
With this new information, Crockett and Tubbs decide to stay in the underground and try to track down Angelina. They set up a stakeout in the bus station, hoping to catch her in the act. Meanwhile, Caroline shows up and tries to talk to Crockett - but he's too focused on the case to give her much attention.
After a few tense moments, Angelina finally shows up. She's accompanied by a group of tough-looking men, and it's clear that she's in charge. Crockett and Tubbs watch as she makes a deal with a group of buyers, exchanging drugs for cash. They're about to move in and make the arrest when suddenly, the building explodes. Crockett and Tubbs barely escape with their lives, and they know they need to regroup and come up with a new plan.
As they work to figure out what happened, Crockett and Tubbs realize that their investigation has put them in danger. They're not sure who they can trust, and they know that they need to be careful if they want to stay alive. In the end, they make a breakthrough and manage to take down Angelina and her organization - but not without some serious risks and sacrifices.
Overall, "Out Where the Buses Don't Run" is a tense and exciting episode that showcases the danger and drama of Miami Vice. With its gritty portrayal of the underground and its portrayal of the drug trade, this episode highlights the risks that Crockett and Tubbs face every day in their work. Despite the danger, however, they remain committed to justice - and they'll do whatever it takes to bring down the bad guys.
