In MeatEater season 7 episode 6, titled "Living Off the Water: Kentucky Fish," host Steven Rinella travels to the Bluegrass State to explore its rich culture and history of fishing. With the help of local experts, Rinella ventures out to catch a variety of fish species in some of Kentucky's pristine waters.
Rinella begins his journey in the southeast part of the state, where he meets up with guide Robert Hunter. Together, they head down the Cumberland River to try their hand at catching trout. As they float down the river, Rinella and Hunter discuss the importance of balancing the conservation of these fish with recreational fishing practices. Rinella is challenged by the elusive trout, but his persistence pays off in the end.
Next, Rinella heads to Lake Cumberland to fish for striped bass with guide Spencer Bowers. Bowers utilizes downriggers to quickly and effectively locate schools of fish. Rinella is impressed with Bowers' skill and knowledge of the lake. They catch several large striped bass, with Rinella noting the thrill of catching a fish that's as big as his leg.
Rinella continues his fishing journey with guide Gerald Alvey, this time targeting blue catfish on the Ohio River. Rinella learns about the river's history, how it's been dammed up to control flooding, and the impact that has had on the river's ecology. Alvey shows Rinella how to rig a circle hook and use live bait to catch blue catfish. Rinella is thrilled with the catch, calling them "the biggest fish he's ever seen."
Lastly, Rinella heads south to meet up with local angler Duane Rice on the Green River. Rice is an expert at catching smallmouth bass on the river and shows Rinella his technique using topwater lures. As they float down the river, they discuss the importance of sustainable fishing practices, particularly when it comes to invasive species like Asian carp.
Throughout the episode, Rinella emphasizes the importance of respecting these fish and the bodies of water where they live. He notes the unique cultural traditions and histories that accompany Kentucky's fishing culture, which he is able to experience firsthand. He also reminds viewers that these fish are not just sport, but can provide food for sustenance and a livelihood for those who depend on them. "Living Off the Water: Kentucky Fish" is a beautiful and educational episode that highlights the bounty and importance of Kentucky's waters.
