MeatEater season 10 episode 8 South Carolina Turkeys takes us on a turkey hunt in the southern state of South Carolina, where we follow host Steven Rinella as he attempts to bag a trophy bird. Rinella is joined by South Carolina native and turkey expert Michael Heitkamp, who has offered to guide Rinella to some of the best turkey hunting spots in the state.
The episode starts with Rinella and Heitkamp scouting for the perfect hunting spot in the beautiful and dense forests of South Carolina. With fall turkey season in full swing, the two hunters are looking for wild turkeys that are feeding on acorns and other food sources in the forest. Rinella explains that this is important because turkeys will be more active and vulnerable during feeding times.
After scouting for a while, Rinella sets up camp and prepares to hunt. Heitkamp explains that it's important to be as quiet and still as possible, as wild turkeys can be easily spooked by movement and noise. Rinella sets up his decoys and calls to the turkeys, hoping to lure one into range. He explains the different types of turkey calls, including the box call, the slate call, and the mouth call, and demonstrates how each one is used.
As the morning progresses, Rinella spots a turkey in the distance and sets off in pursuit. Heitkamp cautions him to be careful, as wild turkeys have excellent eyesight and can easily detect movement. After a tense stalk through the woods, Rinella finally gets within range of the turkey and takes his shot.
After bagging his first turkey of the day, Rinella and Heitkamp head back to camp to prepare the bird for cooking. Rinella demonstrates how to properly clean and process a wild turkey, explaining the different cuts and how to cook each one. He also discusses the importance of conservation, and how hunting responsibly and sustainably can help preserve the natural resources that we all depend on.
After a quick lunch break, Rinella heads out for another round of turkey hunting. As the day wears on, he spots a group of gobblers and sets off in pursuit. After a thrilling chase through the woods, Rinella finally manages to get within range and takes his shot. With two turkeys under his belt, Rinella returns to camp victorious and ready to prepare a delicious wild turkey feast.
