During World War II, a group of misfit sailors are stationed on the fictional PT-73. Their leader is Lieutenant Commander Quinton McHale, whose only goal is to make life as easy and comfortable as possible for himself and his men. In season 3, episode 20, entitled "McHale's Floating Laundromat," trouble arises when McHale and his crew are approached by a group of WAVEs (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) who are in desperate need of a laundry facility.
As the WAVEs explain their situation to McHale, it becomes clear that they have no access to a washing machine and are forced to clean their uniforms by hand, leaving them exhausted and unable to perform their duties effectively. McHale, who has always had an eye for the ladies, sees this as an opportunity to not only help the WAVEs but also to impress them with his ingenuity.
Without hesitation, McHale comes up with the idea of creating a floating laundromat aboard the PT-73. His men are initially skeptical, but McHale is able to convince them that this could be their best chance at receiving an early discharge. Using spare parts and materials, McHale and his crew set to work on constructing their new laundry facility.
As construction on the floating laundromat continues, tensions rise within the PT-73 crew. The sailors are forced to work long hours in cramped spaces, and tempers begin to flare. McHale, who has delegated himself as the supervisor of the project, is feeling the pressure of not only keeping his men in line but also making sure that the laundry facility is up and running in time to impress the WAVEs.
Throughout the episode, McHale's determination to succeed is put to the test. When the laundry machines he has purchased are delivered in the wrong sizes, he must improvise and adapt in order to make them work. His men, who have grown increasingly frustrated with the project, begin to see McHale's commitment in a new light and rally around him to get the job done.
Meanwhile, as they wait for the floating laundromat to be completed, tensions between the WAVEs and the male sailors begin to boil over. Jealousy and competition arise, with both sides trying to one-up the other in various tasks and competitions.
In the end, McHale's floating laundromat is a success. The WAVEs are impressed with the ingenuity of the PT-73 crew and show their gratitude by throwing a party in their honor. McHale, feeling proud of his men and their accomplishment, is able to bask in the admiration of the WAVEs and enjoy a relaxing evening of music, dancing, and good company.
Overall, "McHale's Floating Laundromat" is a fun and lighthearted episode in the series. It allows viewers to see a new side of McHale's character and witness the camaraderie and teamwork among the PT-73 crew. Although it may not be the most action-packed or dramatic episode of the series, it is an enjoyable installment that highlights the creativity and resourcefulness of the sailors during a difficult time in history.
