Maximilian and Marie De Bourgogne is a historical drama television series that premiered in 2019 in Austria. The show is set in the late 15th century and follows the story of the Habsburg dynasty and their pursuit for power, wealth, and love. The storyline is based on the real-life events of the key players, Maximilian I of Austria and his wife, Mary of Burgundy. The show is a love story amidst the political and diplomatic turmoil of the period, and it is a beautiful portrayal of a couple whose love for each other impacts history.

The story is set in the Burgundian Netherlands, a region on the continent of Europe where the Habsburgs had extensive political and economic influence. Maximilian, the Holy Roman Emperor, is a young and ambitious man who is eager to consolidate his power and expand the Habsburg territory. He is intelligent and cunning, but also kind and just, and his intentions are pure. He meets Mary, the beautiful and intelligent daughter of Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy, while on a diplomatic mission to gain her hand in marriage. Their story forms the central theme of the show, and every other political maneuvering revolves around their relationship.

Mary is an admirable character who defies societal norms and is deeply committed to her people. She insists on being a part of the political decisions of the region, and her intelligence and strategic thinking make her an excellent ally to Maximilian. The couple's love grows amid the machinations of rival noble and aristocrats, who have their own agenda and are constantly trying to undermine the Habsburgs. The show does a fantastic job of portraying the complexities of high society life and the added challenges that those born in it face. The power struggles, the conspiracies, and the personal vendettas are all skillfully woven into the plot, creating one that keeps the viewers hooked.

The costumes and set design are breathtaking, and they authentically capture the grandeur and elegance of the period. The jewelry, hairstyles, and makeup draw from historical references and bring the characters to life. The cinematography and the soundtrack also add to the richness of the storytelling. The awe-inspiring landscapes, castles, and fortresses take the viewer back in time to the luxurious world of the Habsburgs, while the background music perfectly captures the ambiance of every scene.

One of the strengths of the show is the cast. The main actors, Christophe Waltz and Tilda Swinton, have a palpable on-screen chemistry that makes them believable as a couple. Their performances are nuanced and touching, and they bring a depth and vulnerability that makes the viewer root for them. The supporting cast is also exceptional, and the roles are well-fleshed out, providing a rich tapestry of characters that add to the plot's intrigue.

The show's writing is its greatest asset. It is evident that the writers did thorough research and drew from historical texts to create a narrative that seamlessly weaves a love story into the historical events of the period. The dialogue is compelling and sophisticated, and one that goes beyond mere surface-level discussion of events. The show tackles themes such as loyalty, duty, sacrifice, and ambition with finesse, and the result is a story that is both relatable and aspirational. The romance between Maximilian and Mary is skillfully entwined with the political events, and every move the couple makes has far-reaching consequences.

Overall, Maximilian and Marie De Bourgogne is an excellent historical drama that is both entertaining and informative. It is a show about love, ambition, and the high stakes of political power, set in a time of great change and progress in Europe. It is a must-watch for fans of historical fiction and those who appreciate superb storytelling.
