In Masterchef Canada season 6 episode 5, titled "School Lunch!", the remaining contestants are tasked with recreating classic school lunch dishes with a creative twist. Host Eden Grinshpan and judges Michael Bonacini, Alvin Leung, and Claudio Aprile visit an elementary school to learn about what Canadian children are currently eating for lunch and to gather inspiration for the challenge ahead.
The contestants are divided into two teams and must prepare a main dish and a dessert for a panel of school children and their teachers. The main dish must include a protein, starch, and vegetable, while the dessert must be nut-free and visually appealing to children.
One team decides to make a chicken parmesan with sweet potato fries and a mixed vegetable medley for the main dish. For the dessert, they create a chocolate cupcake with a hidden surprise – a layer of fresh berries in the center. The other team prepares a tofu stir-fry with quinoa and roasted Brussels sprouts for the main dish. Their dessert is a homemade granola bar with dried fruits and seeds.
As the teams work on their dishes, tensions start to rise as some contestants struggle with cooking the perfect chicken or getting the tofu just right. One contestant even burns their dessert, causing them to quickly come up with a new dessert idea.
Once the dishes are presented to the school children and judges, it's clear that both teams have put a lot of effort into their dishes. The chicken parmesan team impresses with their crispy crust and flavorful sauce, while the tofu stir-fry team wins over the judges with their perfectly cooked quinoa and unique use of Brussels sprouts.
In the end, it's a close call, but one team comes out on top, securing safety from elimination and leaving the other team to face a pressure test in the next episode.
"School Lunch!" proves to be a fun and creative challenge for the Masterchef Canada contestants, while also shedding light on the importance of healthy and delicious school lunch options for Canadian children.
