At the beginning of the episode, Charles Winchester receives a package containing a gramophone. He proceeds to show off the gramophone to his fellow doctors and nurses, only for it to break in front of them. Winchester becomes increasingly annoyed with the situation, and even snaps at his colleagues for suggesting he get it fixed.

Meanwhile, Hawkeye and B.J. are dealing with the wounded soldiers who come into the camp. One soldier, Corcoran, has survived being shot three times, but now suffers from severe nightmares and hallucinations. During one such episode, he threatens to kill B.J., who manages to calm him down with the help of tranquilizers.

After a particularly frustrating day, Winchester visits the Officer's club to unwind. There, he meets Major Morris, a man who appears to be the polar opposite of Winchester. Morris is a rough, boisterous man who enjoys drinking and gambling, and he greets Winchester with a friendly smile.

As the night goes on, Winchester begins to let loose and enjoy himself. He gambles, drinks heavily, and even snatches a kiss from a woman at the club. However, the next morning, Winchester awakens to find that he has no memory of the previous night. His orderly, Private Palmer, informs him that he was highly intoxicated and made a fool of himself, and that he even lost his gramophone in a game of poker.

Winchester is horrified by his own behavior, and begins to question whether he has a split personality. He seeks out Morris, believing that Morris must have been the one who brought out his wild side. However, he is surprised to find that Morris is a completely different person than he remembers: quiet, serious, and almost shy.

As Winchester grapples with his own identity, he becomes increasingly obsessive about tracking down his gramophone. He hounds Palmer relentlessly, even going so far as to accuse the poor orderly of stealing it. Meanwhile, Corcoran's condition worsens, and he is sent into surgery to remove a piece of shrapnel still lodged in his body.

During the surgery, Winchester has a breakthrough: he realizes that his behavior is not the result of a split personality, but a simple desire to let loose and have fun. He sees himself as a man of culture and refinement, but he misses the freedom and carelessness of his youth. Winchester decides to embrace his wild side, and even fulfills a childhood dream by playing the trumpet with a lively jazz band.

The episode ends on a touching note: as the wounded soldiers are loaded onto the helicopter departing the camp, Winchester races after them to deliver his gramophone as a gift to Corcoran. He no longer sees it as a symbol of his refinement, but as a tool to bring happiness and comfort to someone in need. The episode closes with Winchester smiling contentedly, having finally reconciled his two halves into a whole.
