Marvel's The Defenders is a Netflix original series that brings together four of Marvel's gritty superheroes - Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) - to fight a common enemy and protect New York City. The series was released in August 2017 and consists of eight episodes.
The series opens with each of the four heroes dealing with their own demons. Daredevil is trying to come to terms with the events of his second season, Jessica Jones is grappling with guilt over the death of a client, Luke Cage is fresh out of jail and trying to rebuild his life, and Iron Fist is actively looking for The Hand, an ancient and evil organization that he believes is responsible for the death of his parents.
As the series unfolds, the heroes cross paths and eventually come together to stop a common threat - the resurrection of The Hand's leader, Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver). Alexandra is a formidable villain who is ruthless in her pursuit of power and will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. The heroes must work together and put their personal differences aside to stop Alexandra and prevent The Hand from destroying New York City.
One of the strengths of The Defenders is the chemistry between the various cast members. Each of the four heroes brings their own unique perspective and personality to the team, which results in some great banter and character interactions. For example, Daredevil and Jessica Jones have a great dynamic as two flawed characters who are both struggling with their own demons. Luke Cage provides a strong, moral center to the group, while Iron Fist brings his own brand of impulsiveness and naivete.
Another highlight of the series is the action scenes. Each of the heroes has their own distinctive fighting style, which is showcased in various fight scenes throughout the series. Daredevil is a skilled martial artist who uses his heightened senses to his advantage, Jessica Jones relies on her brute strength and attitude, Luke Cage is virtually indestructible and can take on multiple opponents at once, and Iron Fist has the ability to summon the power of the Iron Fist, which allows him to deliver devastating blows. The fight scenes are well-choreographed and visually engaging, making for some exciting viewing.
One of the weaknesses of the series is the villain. Although Sigourney Weaver delivers a strong performance as Alexandra, the character is not as fleshed out as some of the other villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Alexandra is a formidable opponent, but her motivations and backstory are never fully explored, which can make her feel somewhat one-dimensional at times. Additionally, some of the side characters - such as Elektra (Elodie Yung) and Misty Knight (Simone Missick) - don't get as much screen time as they deserve, making their contributions to the story feel somewhat underdeveloped.
Overall, Marvel's The Defenders is a solid series that successfully brings together four of Marvel's grittier superheroes. The chemistry between the cast members is excellent, and the action scenes are thrilling to watch. Although the villain could have been more fleshed out, the series is still an enjoyable watch for anyone who is a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
