The show follows the adventures of a team of agents who work for S.H.I.E.L.D., specializing in dealing with strange and unusual occurrences in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The team is led by Agent Phil Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, who previously appeared in several of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including Iron Man, Thor, and The Avengers. During their adventures, the team must also deal with internal struggles, as the characters confront their personal demons. The team members also frequently face moral dilemmas as they encounter new and dangerous challenges, which sometimes put them at odds with their teammates.
Throughout the series, new characters are introduced to the team, including former members of other secret organizations as well as former enemies, who later help the team in their fight against an enemy of humanity. Some of these include the mercenary Lance Hunter, played by Nick Blood, and the ex-Hydra agent, Bobbi Morse, played by Adrianne Palicki. In later seasons, other characters join the team, such as Inhuman Yo-Yo Rodriguez, played by Natalia Cordova-Buckley.
Many other notable actors make appearances throughout the series, such as Luke Mitchell, Henry Simmons, Constance Zimmer, Ruth Negga, J. August Richards, B.J. Britt, Blair Underwood, Bill Paxton, Edward James Olmos, Dichen Lachman, and Patton Oswalt. Additionally, various Marvel Cinematic Universe actors make cameo appearances, such as Cobie Smulders, Samuel L. Jackson, Jaimie Alexander, Hayley Atwell, and Lucy Lawless, as well as others.
The series was acclaimed for its unique storylines, the complexity of its characters, and its ability to overlay its stories with the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. It also saw great success in its ratings and was popular with comic book and science fiction fans.
