In "If Al Had a Hammer," the third episode of Married...with Children's sixth season, Al Bundy faces a common man's nightmare: his wife Peg wants to remodel the bathroom. Knowing that the project will take months and cost a small fortune, Al initially refuses to support her project, but after being convinced that it will make their house sell for more money, he decides to take on the renovation himself.
As soon as he starts, however, the task proves to be much harder than he anticipated. Al quickly finds out that he has to call on all his skills and resources to complete the job, leading him to rekindle his love for construction work. Meanwhile, Peg basks in the glory of being a glamorous client, making unreasonable demands and throwing fits when things don't go her way.
Meanwhile, Bud becomes obsessed with the idea of going to a trendy nightclub, but his desperate search for a fake ID leads to unexpected results. Kelly, meanwhile, has her own problems, as she tries out for a part in a school play and finds out that her acting talents are less than spectacular.
As the episode progresses, we see Al's determination to finish the bathroom project grow stronger. He repeatedly tells his family that he can handle any task that comes his way, reminding them that he's the man who built this house with his own hands. But as the project drags on, Al becomes more and more exhausted, and his physique suffers.
As usual, the show relies heavily on witty one-liners and comedic situations rather than complex character development. Nonetheless, we see the familiar themes of frustration, miscommunication, and hopelessness that are present throughout the series. At the heart of the episode is the idea that life constantly throws unexpected challenges at us, and it's up to us to face them head-on with humor, resilience, and, of course, a good sense of humor.
Overall, "If Al Had a Hammer" is a typical episode of Married...with Children, filled with sarcasm, raunchy humor, and a healthy dose of dysfunction, and a definite must-watch for fans of the show.
