Al Bundy, the main character of the show, is still struggling as a low-ranking shoe salesman and he hates his job. Nonetheless, in this episode, he receives good news from the bank; he and his family have been approved for a loan to purchase a nice new house in a good neighborhood. Al is excited to finally be able to move out of their current small house in a poor neighborhood.
However, his excitement is short-lived when his wife, Peggy, informs him that her mother is moving in with them, killing his dreams of a better life. Mama Wanker, Peggy's mother, is a chain-smoker with a wisecracking attitude that Al cannot stand. He tries to convince Peggy that it's a terrible idea, but she's already made up her mind. Al is less than thrilled with the new living arrangement, but he ultimately accepts it, realizing that he has no choice.
Meanwhile, Kelly and Bud, Al and Peggy's children, are excited about the prospect of moving into a new house. They imagine their new bedrooms, a pool table, and a hot tub in the backyard. But their dreams are also shattered when Al reveals that he and Peggy have decided to put Mama Wanker in their new basement, rather than giving the kids their own rooms. The kids are forced to share a room, but they still manage to get a pool table and a hot tub in the basement as well.
As the move progresses, a new problem arises: Mama Wanker's dog. The dog, who is vicious and untrained, chases Al all around the house and eventually bites him. Al insists that the dog must go, but Peggy is adamant that her mother's dog is a part of the family and cannot be given away. Al, Kelly, and Bud hatch a plan to get rid of the dog, but their plan is foiled by Peggy. The dog remains, and Al continues to be tormented.
Eventually, Al comes to the realization that he cannot continue living with Mama Wanker and her dog. He concocts a plan to convince Peggy to move her mother to a retirement home. He enlists the help of the children and even Mama Wanker's old boyfriend, who agrees to take her out on dates and ultimately convinces her to move into the home.
With Mama Wanker gone, Al is able to finally enjoy his new house. He spends his days lounging in his recliner, eating chips, and watching television. The kids have their own rooms, and everything seems perfect. However, in the final moments of the episode, Peggy reveals that she has invited her aunt to move in with them. Al's face falls, and the audience is left wondering what new challenges he will face in the next episode.
