Marley's Ghosts is a British sitcom that premiered in 2015 on Gold and later on BritBox. It stars Sarah Alexander as the protagonist, Alison Marley, Jo Joyner as her best friend Marie, and Nicholas Burns as her husband Mike. Written by Daniel Peak and also featuring John Pirkis as the titular ghost, the show follows Alison, a woman who can see ghosts, as she tries to navigate her daily life while being haunted by three of them.
The show opens with Alison unexpectedly inheriting a large old house from a distant relative. After moving in, she is visited by three ghosts: her randy and mischievous ex-boyfriend, a jilted bride, and a former owner of the house who is obsessed with renovating it. The ghosts quickly realize that Alison can see and hear them, which isn't something that happens often.
While initially skeptical of her ability to communicate with the dead, Alison eventually accepts her bizarre talent and the ghosts become her confidantes, often offering advice that ranges from questionable to downright dangerous. However, they are not always a welcome presence, especially when they interfere with her relationships with her husband, best friend, and nosy neighbor. Marie thinks that Alison is losing her mind, while Mike remains blissfully unaware of everything that's going on.
The show combines elements of traditional British sitcoms with a supernatural twist. It is a comedy with a slightly dark edge, as the ghosts are not always benevolent and often have their own agendas. It is interesting to see how Alison navigates her various relationships while also trying to keep the ghosts under control. However, it is the chemistry between the four main characters that really makes the show enjoyable to watch.
Sarah Alexander is brilliant as Alison, playing her as a level-headed woman who just happens to have this strange ability. She is often the straight man to the ghosts' antics, but she also has her own quirks that come to light as the series progresses. Jo Joyner is equally fantastic as Alison's best friend Marie. She is supportive but also has her own problems, including a husband who is always away on business. The chemistry between Alexander and Joyner is palpable, and their banter is some of the funniest in the show.
Nicholas Burns is also great as Mike, Alison's husband. He is a lovable but somewhat clueless character who is unaware of his wife's ability to communicate with ghosts. He often provides comedic relief and is a good foil to the other characters. John Pirkis rounds out the main cast as the titular ghost, who is an eccentric and flamboyant character. His presence often adds an extra layer of chaos to the already crazy events that take place in the show.
Overall, Marley's Ghosts is a funny and entertaining sitcom that combines traditional British comedy with a supernatural twist. The chemistry between the four main actors is fantastic, and the show is kept fresh by the addition of various guest stars throughout the series. The show is definitely worth a watch for fans of British comedy or anyone looking for something a little bit different.
