Man to Man with Dean Learner is a satirical comedy talk show that premiered on Channel 4 in 2006. The show is hosted by the fictional character, Dean Learner, played by Matthew Holness. Each episode features Dean interviewing various guests, ranging from celebrities to experts in various fields.

The show is set in a mockup talk-show studio, complete with a live band and a studio audience. The opening credits feature images of various objects, such as a typewriter and a record player, laid out on a table, which are meant to symbolize Dean's eclectic interests and his love for vintage items.

Richard Ayoade made his acting debut on this show, playing various roles, such as a producer, a director, and a co-host. Satu Suominen also appeared on the show as Dean's enigmatic assistant, Miss Flange.

What separates Man to Man with Dean Learner from other talk shows is its irreverent and absurd humor. Each episode features a different segment, ranging from Dean's improvised monologues to interviews with guests who are quite often fictional characters created by the show's writers.

One of the show's most memorable characters is Garth Marenghi, who is introduced as a bestselling horror author. Garth is a self-proclaimed genius who hosts his own segments on the show, where he talks about his books and his "unconventional" writing process. Garth's segments are always hilarious, as he is completely unaware that the audience finds him ridiculous. His exaggerated bravado and utter self-assurance make him a fan-favorite.

Another standout segment is an interview with a man who claims to have invented a machine that can determine a person's soulmate. The interview quickly descends into chaos, as the man's invention is revealed to be a cardboard box with a teddy bear inside.

Man to Man with Dean Learner is also famous for its use of recurring gags and jokes throughout the series. For example, every episode features a different version of the opening credits, with variations on the objects on the table. Certain jokes, like Dean's assertion that every guest on the show is his "best friend", or his love for Italian food, appear in multiple episodes.

The show's humor is not for everyone, but those who appreciate absurdist and irreverent comedy will find plenty to enjoy. Man to Man with Dean Learner is a cult classic that has maintained a dedicated fanbase since its initial release.

In conclusion, Man to Man with Dean Learner is a satirical comedy talk show that features interviews with various guests, ranging from celebrities to fictional characters. The show's irreverent humor and use of absurdity make it unique and memorable. Richard Ayoade, Matthew Holness, and Satu Suominen all give standout performances, bringing their unique characters to life. While the show's humor may not be for everyone, fans of absurdist comedy will find plenty to enjoy in this cult classic.

Dean's planned guest for the show was celebrated British character actor Randolph Caer, who starred in films as diverse as Bitch Killer and That Duck 3: Duck in the City. Tragically, however, Randolph died the morning before the show's transmission, and so Dean puts on a 'celebration of his life, through the eyes of those who knew him best. A kind of This is Your Death'. Dean does this by showing sections of archive footage and calls on previous guests including Garth Marenghi, Steve Pising, Glynn Nimron and Amir Chanan to pay their respects to the late actor.

In this special musical edition of Man to Man Dean talks with one of the most revered folk guitarists of his generation, Merriman Weir.
