Ep 6. Found Money
- November 4, 1988
In Mama's Family season 5 episode 6, titled "Found Money," the Harper family is thrilled when they discover an envelope filled with $3,000 in cash tucked away in Mama's couch. Everyone has their own plans for what they want to spend the money on, but they soon realize that the rightful owner of the money may come looking for it.
Initially, Mama is hesitant to give the money back, arguing that whoever left it in her couch clearly didn't care enough about it. However, after a conversation with Iola, Mama starts to feel guilty about keeping the money and decides to try to find the owner.
The family works together to track down the person who lost the money. They start by putting an ad in the local newspaper and asking around the neighborhood. They even turn to psychic Aunt Fran for help, who seems to have a vision of the owner being a man in his late 60s named Mr. Jenkins.
After several false leads and dead ends, the Harpers finally locate Mr. Jenkins and return the money to him. He is overcome with gratitude and explains that the money was all he had left after his wife passed away. He had been saving it to pay for her headstone but had forgotten where he had hidden it in Mama's couch.
Despite being relieved that they did the right thing, the Harpers are disappointed that they won't be able to use the money for their own purposes. However, Mama surprises them all by revealing that she had squirreled away a small portion of the money for each of them to spend on themselves.
Throughout the episode, the Harper family members confront their own desires and sense of right and wrong as they grapple with what to do with the found money. This leads to some humorous moments, as well as some touching ones, as the family ultimately comes together to help a stranger in need.
"Found Money" is an entertaining and thought-provoking episode of Mama's Family that showcases the show's signature blend of comedy and heart. Fans of the series will appreciate seeing the lovable Harper family navigate another sticky situation with their trademark mix of humor and heart.
