Hal Quits is the fourteenth episode of the second season of Malcolm in the Middle. The episode opens with Reese and Malcolm fighting over their favorite chair in the living room. Meanwhile, Lois continues to struggle with her job and is taking out her frustrations on the family.
The stress between Hal and Lois reaches a breaking point when Hal decides to take on a DIY project to renovate the garage. The project quickly turns into a disaster, causing Lois to lose her temper and lash out at Hal. The argument culminates in Lois telling Hal that he needs to get his life together and start contributing to the family again.
Feeling ashamed and defeated, Hal decides to take a job at a fast food restaurant. Despite the low pay and long hours, Hal finds fulfillment in his work and is able to regain his sense of purpose. The episode ends with Lois apologizing to Hal and acknowledging the sacrifices that he made for the family.
