Majestic Prince is a mecha anime series produced by Dogakobo that premiered in Japan in April 2013, later airing internationally on various networks. The series follows a group of genetically-engineered children, known as the "MJP" or "Majestic Princes," who are tasked with defending humanity from a race of aliens known as the Wulgaru.
The show is set in the future, where Earth has expanded its influence out to other planets in the galaxy. The Wulgaru, who are more technologically advanced and physically superior, begin to attack the Earth's fleets, leading to a call-to-action for the MJP. The MJP team is made up of five teenage pilots, each with their own unique mecha suit, and led by Commander Simon, a veteran soldier and mentor.
Izuru Hitachi, the leader of the MJP team, is a clumsy and carefree boy who loves to cook and is often ridiculed by his teammates for his lack of coordination. However, he has an unparalleled ability to improvise in combat situations, making him a valuable asset to the team. Joining him are Toshikazu Asagi, a serious and diligent pilot who struggles with the weight of being second-in-command; Kei Kugimiya, a girl with a hot-headed and competitive personality who serves as the team's close-combat specialist; Tamaki Irie, a bubbly and enthusiastic girl who operates the team's long-range sniping unit; and finally, Suruga Yagami, a stoic and aloof boy who operates the team's artillery.
As the MJP team begins their missions against the Wulgaru, they quickly discover that their enemies are not just simple aggressors. The Wulgaru are a complex civilization with their own political intrigues, and some of them even begin to question the logic of their own war. The MJP team struggles to balance their duty as soldiers with their own personal struggles and uncertainties, leading to moments of tension and self-discovery throughout the series.
The show features impressive animation and action sequences, with unique mecha designs and intense battles between the MJP team and the Wulgaru. However, it is the characters and their interactions that truly make the show stand out. The MJP team is a group of misfits, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, yet they are able to come together and form an unbreakable bond. Their struggles with self-doubt and anxiety make them relatable to viewers, and their relationship dynamics are engaging and emotional.
The voice acting in the series is also impressive, with Monica Rial providing the voice of Tamaki, Shelley Calene-Black voicing the stern and resolute Commander Simon, and Corey Hartzog portraying the hot-headed Kei. The rest of the cast is equally talented, and each character is given a unique and distinct personality that makes them stand out.
Overall, Majestic Prince is an entertaining and emotional mecha anime that is well worth a watch. The series has a good balance of action and character development, ensuring that viewers will be invested in both the battles and the personal struggles of the MJP team. With a likable cast of characters, impressive animation, and engaging story, Majestic Prince is a strong addition to the mecha genre.
