Thomas Magnum, the private investigator, is in the fourth episode of the first season, titled "Thank Heaven for Little Girls, and Big Ones Too." In this episode, Magnum and his merry band of colleagues investigate a case involving a young girl involved in a hit-and-run accident.
The young girl, named Cindy, is the daughter of Magnum's friend and fellow Vietnam War veteran, Mac. Mac is clearly distressed about his daughter's accident and asks Magnum to look into the matter. Cindy was struck by a car while walking home late at night and is now in a coma. She can't provide any details about what happened, and no witnesses have come forward.
Magnum starts his investigation by questioning Cindy's boyfriend, Davey. But Davey seems to have a solid alibi and does not appear to be involved. The investigation also leads Magnum to believe that the hit-and-run may not have been an accident after all.
Meanwhile, Magnum is also dealing with some personal issues. He runs into a former girlfriend, Linda, who now works as a public defender. Linda informs Magnum that her client, a man named Bobby, has information that may be useful in Cindy's case. But Bobby is facing a long prison sentence and wants to cut a deal for a reduced sentence in exchange for his information.
With Linda's help, Magnum arranges to have Bobby brought to the hospital to speak with Cindy's father. But when Bobby arrives, he tells Mac that he can't remember anything about the night of Cindy's accident. Mac is understandably upset, and Magnum's investigation hits a dead end.
But Magnum is not one to give up easily. He continues to comb through the evidence and re-interview the witnesses. Eventually, he comes up with a theory about what happened that seems to make sense. But proving his theory requires catching the culprit in the act.
In the end, Magnum concocts a plan to catch the hit-and-run driver in the act. The plan involves him and TC disguising themselves as a couple of hapless drunks and staging an accident of their own. Sure enough, the hit-and-run driver takes the bait and is apprehended.
The episode ends with Magnum successfully solving the case and Cindy waking up from her coma. As it turns out, the hit-and-run driver was a local politician who had been drinking that night and panicked when he hit Cindy. Magnum is able to bring him to justice and gets justice for Cindy's family.
