Macross II is an anime television series that revolves around a conflict between humans and an alien race. It is produced by Big West and AIC, and directed by Kenichi Yatagai. The show is a follow-up to the original Macross series from 1982, but it is not a direct sequel.
The story takes place in the year 2092, 80 years after the events of the original Macross. Earth is now a peaceful planet, after the humans defeated the gigantic alien race that attacked the planet decades ago. However, new threats have appeared, and once again, the humans must confront them.
The first new threat is the appearance of a new alien race, the Marduk. They are a humanoid race that shares some physical similarities with humans, but they are significantly stronger and biologically different in many ways. The Marduk announce their arrival by attacking a ceremony where the new SDF-1 Macross is being unveiled. The Macross is a massive spaceship that can transform into a giant robot, and it serves as the centerpiece of human defense against alien threats.
To counter the Marduk threat, the humans develop new technologies, including new mechas called variable fighters. These are piloted by skilled pilots, including our protagonist Hibiki Kanzaki (voiced in the Japanese version by Takehito Koyasu). Hibiki is a young journalist who becomes involved in the conflict as he investigates the mysterious appearance of a singer named Ishtar (voiced by Tomo Sakurai), who has ties to the Marduk.
As the story progresses, Hibiki and Ishtar get caught up in a complex web of political intrigue, hidden agendas, and personal struggles. They must navigate the treacherous waters of love, loyalty, and betrayal, all while fighting a war that could decide the fate of humanity.
The cast of characters in Macross II is diverse, with a mix of new and returning characters from the original series. Notable characters include Sylvie Gena (voiced by Ryunosuke Ohbayashi), a young woman who pilots a variable fighter and becomes romantically involved with Hibiki; Elaine (voiced by Rio Natsuki), a talented singer who is also a love interest for Hibiki; and Nexx (voiced by Nobutoshi Canna), a hot-headed pilot who clashes with Hibiki but ultimately becomes his ally in the fight against the Marduk.
Another major character is the enigmatic Emperor Ingues (voiced by Shou Hayami), the leader of the Marduk. He is a complex figure, with his motives and past shrouded in mystery. He is also a powerful psychic, and his abilities play a crucial role in the conflict between the humans and the Marduk.
The animation in Macross II is impressive, with detailed designs for the variable fighters and other mechas, as well as beautiful backgrounds and special effects. The music is also a highlight, with several memorable songs performed by Ishtar and Elaine, as well as an epic orchestral score.
Overall, Macross II is an entertaining and engaging sci-fi anime with a strong cast of characters, a well-crafted story, and stunning animation and music. It is a worthy addition to the Macross franchise and a must-watch for fans of the genre.
