Detective John Luther returns to work after being on leave due to a traumatic event. He's immediately called into a high profile case- a home invasion in which the parents were killed, leaving their young daughter, Alice, as the sole survivor. Initially, there are no leads, and John and his team (including his former colleague, Ian) begin to piece together the few clues they have. Meanwhile, Alice proves to be a curious and unsettling character, getting under John's skin.
As the investigation continues, a suspect emerges- a young man named Henry Madsen who's been involved with the daughter of the family. John's convinced Henry's involved and does some digging into his past, discovering a history of domestic abuse. However, when Henry's alibi checks out, John's forced to let him go.
Alice continues to insinuate herself into John's life, which causes tension in his personal relationships. His wife, Zoe, is wary of Alice and their interactions, while his new partner, Justin, is dismissive of John's theories about the case. This all comes to a head when the killer strikes again, targeting the one witness who could identify him. John has to confront the fact that Henry may not be the only suspect- there may be two killers involved.
As the stakes heighten, John teams up with Alice to try and catch the second killer before he strikes again. But when the killer targets someone close to John, he's forced to take drastic measures to protect his loved ones. The final moments of the episode set up a tense and dramatic cliffhanger for the rest of the season.
Overall, the first episode of "Luther" is a gripping and intense introduction to the series. It establishes the character of John Luther as a tortured but determined detective who's haunted by his past. The case at the center of the episode is suspenseful and well-crafted, and the addition of Alice as a complex and ambiguous character adds an extra layer of intrigue to the narrative. With strong performances from Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson (who went on to win a Golden Globe for her role as Alice), "Luther" proves to be a must-see for fans of the crime drama genre.
