Lunatics is an Australian mockumentary comedy television series created by and starring Chris Lilley. The show features Lilley portraying multiple eccentric characters, all of whom have their own unique quirks and obsessions.
In the first episode of the series, appropriately titled "Episode 1," viewers are introduced to each of the show's characters and get a glimpse into their individual lives and personalities. The episode starts with a brief introduction from Lilley, with him explaining that he will be portraying six different characters over the course of the series.
The first character we meet is Keith Dick, a fashion retail billionaire who has an obsession with horses. Keith spends his days at his estate in the English countryside, surrounded by his prized stallions and venturing out only to attend exclusive fashion events. We see Keith interacting with his staff, who are all too happy to pander to his every whim.
Next, we meet Becky Douglas, a 19-year-old college student who is passionate about social media and becoming a famous influencer. Becky attends a fraternity party with her best friend, and we see her attempting to impress the other guests with her social media presence. She's constantly posting to various platforms throughout the evening and even goes to great lengths to stage the perfect photo.
Another character we meet in this first episode is Jana Melhoopen-Jonks, an eccentric pet psychic who claims to have the ability to communicate with animals. Jana takes us on a tour of her home, which is filled with animal-themed decor and a plethora of pets, including a talking dog. We see Jana conducting a psychic reading for a client and even performing a bizarre form of yoga with her pets.
One of the most outrageous characters we meet in "Episode 1" is Quentin Cook, a real estate agent who dresses and acts like a 7-year-old child. Quentin lives with his mother, who treats him like a child and indulges his every whim. In one scene, we see Quentin throwing a temper tantrum when his mother won't allow him to have a cookie before dinner. Later on, he takes us on a tour of one of the properties he is trying to sell, and we see him acting like a child and making inappropriate comments to potential buyers.
Next up is Gavin McGregor, a ruthless ex-convict who is obsessed with his pet bulldog. Gavin lives in a run-down trailer park and spends his days training his dog to fight other dogs for money. We see him engaging in a brutal dogfighting match and even getting into a physical altercation with another dog owner.
The final character we meet in "Episode 1" is Joyce Jeffries, a hoarder who is obsessed with her pet sheep. Joyce takes us on a tour of her home, which is filled to the brim with junk and clutter. She shows us her prized sheep, which she treats like a member of her family. We see Joyce getting into a confrontation with animal control officers who are trying to take away her sheep.
Overall, "Episode 1" of Lunatics is a hilarious and absurd introduction to the show's many oddball characters. Chris Lilley's performances are over-the-top and outrageous, with each character having their own distinct personality and quirks. The mockumentary format allows for plenty of laughs, as we see these characters interacting with one another and the world around them. If you're a fan of off-beat comedies, you won't want to miss Lunatics.
