Lucifer, the devil himself, has grown increasingly bored with the responsibilities of ruling over Hell, and so he has decided to take a break and retire to Los Angeles. Once there, he spends his days running a nightclub, luxuriating in all the earthly pleasures he can find, and generally living a life of carefree abandon.
On one particular night, while enjoying his club, Lucifer witnesses a murder. He's quite intrigued by the whole scenario, and ends up becoming involved in the investigation. He takes on the role of a consultant to the Los Angeles police department, which puts him in contact with a cop named Chloe Decker.
It's immediately apparent that Chloe is completely immune to Lucifer's charms, which only adds to his fascination with her. It turns out that she also has a complex backstory -- she's a single mom who has to deal with a difficult ex, and she's also just returned to work after being on leave for some time.
Together, Lucifer and Chloe hit the streets to find out who killed the young pop starlet they both witnessed being murdered. Lucifer's supernatural abilities allow him to identify the killer's guilt, but he soon discovers that his involvement in the case is much more complicated than it initially seemed.
As the investigation moves forward, Lucifer and Chloe start to develop a begrudging respect for one another. Chloe is skeptical about the "consultant's" seemingly supernatural abilities, but as they continue to work together, she can't help but be impressed by his insights.
Meanwhile, Lucifer's brother, Amenadiel, appears in Los Angeles. Amenadiel is deeply concerned about his brother's decision to take a vacation from his duties in Hell, and he warns Lucifer that he's putting himself -- and everyone in his life -- in danger.
The central plot of this episode revolves around solving the murder of the young pop star. However, it's also clear from the get-go that there's a much deeper story at play, involving complex relationships and the supernatural powers of the show's central characters.
Overall, the first episode of Lucifer is an intriguing introduction to the show's premise. It sets the stage for a series that's part crime procedural, part supernatural drama, and part character study. As the episode ends, it's clear that there are many interesting stories to be told about the devil's time on Earth, and his evolving relationships with the people he encounters there.
