Love Tyrant, also known as Renai Boukun, is a Japanese anime series that debuted in early 2017. The show was produced by EMT Squared and directed by Atsushi Nigorikawa. It is an adaptation of the manga series of the same name by Megane Mihoshi, which began serialization in 2012.
The show follows the story of a high school student named Seiji Aino who is approached by a mischievous cupid named Guri. Guri has lost her love diary, which contains the names of her previous lovers and needs Seiji's help to retrieve it. In exchange, she offers to help Seiji confess his love to his crush, Akane Hiyama. However, things quickly become complicated when Seiji accidentally kisses Guri, activating a cursed item called a Kiss Note.
The Kiss Note allows whoever possesses it to pair up any two people they want, simply by writing their names inside. When Guri accidentally writes Seiji and herself into the book, the two become "lovers" and are unable to separate until they can pair off with someone else. If they refuse to do so, they will both die.
To complicate matters further, Akane Hiyama - the object of Seiji's affections - is revealed to be a yandere, or a person who becomes violent and possessive in pursuit of their love interests. To make matters worse, Guri decides to play matchmaker by adding Akane to the Kiss Note, leading to an unpredictable love quadrangle that threatens to destroy them all.
The show is a blend of different genres, including romantic comedy, drama, and fantasy. The characters are eccentric and quirky, with each one bringing their own unique personality to the mix. The animation is vibrant and colorful, with exaggerated expressions and comedic sound effects adding to the humor.
One of the standout aspects of Love Tyrant is its use of parody and satire. The show takes several cliches and tropes from the romantic comedy genre and turns them on their head, often resulting in unexpected and hilarious outcomes. For example, the character of Akane is a parody of the yandere archetype, with her violent behavior played for laughs rather than horror.
Another strong aspect of the show is its character development. Despite the wacky premise and comedic tone, the characters are given genuine emotional arcs and growth throughout the series. Seiji begins as a timid and indecisive protagonist, but through his trials and tribulations, he learns how to stand up for himself and become more confident. Similarly, Guri starts off as a carefree and naive cupid, but over the course of the series, she learns about the complexities of human emotion and develops a deeper empathy for others.
The soundtrack of Love Tyrant is also worth noting. The opening theme, "Koi? de Ai? de Boukun desu!" performed by Wake Up, Girls!, is catchy and upbeat, setting the tone for the show's zany antics. The ending theme, "Suki Ai" by Fridays, is a slower ballad that captures the show's more emotional moments.
All in all, Love Tyrant is an entertaining and irreverent romantic comedy that manages to both parody and celebrate the genre. Its unique premise, colorful characters, and sharp writing make it a standout anime series that is well worth a watch.
