Loudermilk is an American television comedy-drama series that premiered on the Audience Network in October 2017, produced by Bobby Mort and Peter Farrelly. The show aired for two seasons, comprising of 20 episodes, and ended in December 2020. The series is set in Seattle and revolves around the life of Sam Loudermilk (Ron Livingston), a recovering alcoholic and substance abuse counselor. Sam is an acerbic, misanthropic individual with a sharp tongue, living a lonely life with his cat, Mojo. He runs a support group for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts, where he employs unconventional methods of treatment that often offend and alienate his patients.

The show's first season introduces us to Sam and his fellow AA group members, with whom he has a love-hate relationship. He regularly clashes with his best friend, Ben (Will Sasso), a former alcoholic who now owns a bar, over their differing ideologies about life, alcoholism, and their respective paths to sobriety. Sam is also frequently visited by Claire (Anja Savcic), a young heroin addict whom he had once rescued and who now helps him in his support group. Together, the trio navigates the highs and lows of their day-to-day lives while dealing with addiction and sobriety.

Loudermilk, as a show, stands out for its realistic portrayal of addiction, recovery, and the people who suffer from it. The show's treatment of addiction and its aftermath is not moralistic; instead, it handles the subject matter with sensitivity, humor, and honesty. Ron Livingston's performance as Sam is remarkable, and he gives the character an edge that makes the audience both love him and hate him in equal measure. Will Sasso's portrayal of Ben adds a comedic element to the show, which serves as a perfect foil to Sam's surly demeanor. Anja Savcic's Claire is the perfect blend of vulnerability and strength, and her character's backstory is one of the highlights of the entire show.

The show often deals with heavy themes such as loneliness, grief, trauma, and human connection. It attempts to delve into the psyche of the recovering addict, exploring the reasons behind their addiction, their struggles in staying sober, and the impact that their addiction has had on their lives and the lives of the people around them. In doing so, the show humanizes addiction and the people who suffer from it, making it impossible for the viewer not to empathize with the characters and their plight.

One of the unique aspects of the show is its use of dark humor. The show never shies away from using humor to address serious issues, and it often finds a fine balance between being comedic and poignant. The humor employed in the show is not always politically correct, and some viewers may find it offensive. Still, it is an essential aspect of the show, and it adds to the show's overall charm and appeal.

The show's second season takes a darker turn and is more emotionally charged than its predecessor. It deals with the aftermath of Ben's relapse, which leads to a series of events that change the dynamic between various characters in the show. The season also sheds light on Sam's past and his complicated relationship with his sister, revealing a side of Sam that we had never seen before.

Overall, Loudermilk is a well-written, well-acted, and well-produced show that deserves much more recognition than it has received. It is an entertaining and informative show that addresses important social issues without being too preachy or condescending. It is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys dark humor, realistic portrayal of addiction and recovery, and excellent acting.
