In Lost season 5 episode 9, titled "Namaste," the story picks up with the remaining survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 trying to navigate their way through life on the island in 1977. After being teleported to 1974 by the island's time-shifting properties, they have now landed in a new time period, and we find out how they cope with the fact that their entire reality has shifted.
The episode is named "Namaste" after the greeting used by the Dharma Initiative, a scientific research group that has established a settlement on the island. Those who hail from the future, like Jack, Kate, and Hurley, are now considered "hostiles" by the Dharma Initiative, forcing them to use fake identities to blend in with the group. This creates some humorous moments as we see how well or poorly the characters are able to pull this off.
We also get to witness the long-awaited reunion between Sawyer, Juliet, and Jin, all of whom have been stranded in this time period for three years. Despite this, the way in which the characters interact with one another is markedly different than how they did in the present day. Sawyer, who has become a trusted member of the Dharma Initiative, now goes by James LaFleur and enjoys a position of leadership within the community. Meanwhile, Juliet is quite content with her new life as a Dharma doctor, and Jin is left feeling somewhat lost and disconnected after being separated from his wife for so long.
In addition to the personal relationships that are reshaped in this new reality, there are some important plot developments that occur as well. The characters begin to piece together why the Dharma Initiative was brought to the island and what their ultimate goals may have been. We see flashbacks which give us insight into characters we have not seen before.
The episode ends with a tense confrontation between the Dharma Initiative and another group that has also established a presence on the island. This raises questions about the larger conflict that has been building throughout the season, with some of the characters being forced to question where their loyalties truly lie.
Overall, "Namaste" is an intriguing and thrilling episode that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. It expertly explores the various ways in which the characters are forced to adapt to their new reality while still maintaining the series' trademark mystery and intrigue. It is a perfect example of what makes Lost such a beloved and complex show.
