In Lost season 1 episode 9, entitled "Solitary," we get a closer look at Sayid's past and his current struggles on the island. The episode begins with Sayid discovering a cable in the forest that leads him to a mysterious woman named Rousseau. Rousseau informs Sayid that she has been on the island for sixteen years and that the others on the island, including Sayid's fellow survivors, are dangerous.
Meanwhile, back at the beach, Sayid's absence sparks concern among the other survivors who search frantically for him. Kate reveals to Jack that she knows Sayid's secret past as a torturer for the Iraqi Republican Guard. Jack confronts Sayid about his past and accuses him of lying to the group. Sayid admits to his past but insists that he is not the same person he once was.
Sayid's interactions with Rousseau reveal more about the mysterious happenings on the island. Rousseau claims that the island is cursed and that the strange noises and whispers in the jungle are coming from the "others." She asks Sayid to bring her a battery so that she can power her radio and try to make contact with the outside world.
Sayid agrees to help Rousseau and sets off to find a battery. While he is searching for the battery, Sayid falls into a trap set by the others and is captured. The others accuse Sayid of being a spy and demand to know what he knows about their operations on the island. Sayid insists that he is not a spy and that he only wants to find a way off the island.
Meanwhile, the other survivors continue their search for Sayid and stumble upon a message in a bottle that was sent out to sea by a couple who were also stranded on the island. The message gives the survivors hope that they may not be alone on the island and inspires them to keep searching for a way off.
Back in the jungle, Sayid manages to escape from his captors and returns to the beach where he is greeted with suspicion and mistrust. However, Sawyer steps forward and defends Sayid, reminding the group that they are all in this together and that they need to work together if they want to survive.
The episode ends with Sayid apologizing to the group for his past and promising to use his skills to help them survive on the island. The survivors come together around a fire and share stories about their lives before the crash, finding comfort in their newfound community.
"Solitary" is a tense and intriguing episode that delves deeper into the mystery of the island and the struggles of the survivors to trust each other. Sayid's past is explored in detail, adding a new layer of complexity to his already fascinating character.
