In Lost season 1 episode 14, "Special," a new character named Michael explores the island and tries to bond with his estranged son, Walt. Walt has been feeling left out among the group of survivors, so Michael takes him to the jungle to teach him how to throw a homemade boomerang. Along the way, they encounter strange occurrences such as a polar bear and a group of whispers.
Meanwhile, Hurley is in charge of inventory and discovers that Ethan, a supposed survivor, is not on the plane’s passenger manifest. As a result, he becomes increasingly suspicious of Ethan's true motives. Sayid interrogates Ethan to learn more about him, but Ethan proves to be very elusive. Sayid’s frustrations escalate when Jack reveals that he lost contact with Locke, and he realizes the situation on the island may be more dangerous than he thought.
Elsewhere, another problem arises when Shannon discovers that Vincent, Walt’s dog, has run away. She frantically searches for him and enlists the help of several other survivors. This leads her to Boone, who has been struggling with his feelings for Shannon.
Overall, "Special" is an episode that explores the relationships between the survivors. Michael and Walt’s storyline reveals a new layer to the father-son dynamic, while Hurley and Sayid’s investigations into Ethan and the island bring up questions about trust and safety. Shannon and Boone’s arc, on the other hand, focuses on the more personal relationships among the group. As the group struggles to survive and understand the island, tensions continue to mount and the stakes get higher.
