In Hare Conditioned, season 1 episode 3 of the classic cartoon show Looney Tunes, we're introduced to Bugs Bunny and his nemesis, Elmer Fudd. Elmer is a hapless, bumbling hunter who is always trying to catch Bugs, but never seems to succeed.
In this particular episode, Elmer inherits a million dollars from his uncle and decides to use his newfound wealth to build a big, fancy department store. Bugs, always up for a prank, decides to go along with Elmer's plan and becomes a salesman at the store.
Bugs' main objective is to sell Elmer a lot of expensive items he doesn't need, which he does with his usual charm and mischief. He convinces Elmer to buy a suit, shoes, hat, even a pipe. But when Bugs tries to sell Elmer a rubber diving suit, things go awry.
Elmer, not realizing what he's getting himself into, purchases the diving suit and dons it in his office. Bugs, being the prankster that he is, sneaks into Elmer's office and inflates the suit with a helium tank he finds there.
Elmer begins to float away, and chaos ensues as Bugs tries to bring him down to earth. Ultimately, Bugs pretends to be an angel and convinces Elmer to "do good deeds" in order to not float away to heaven. Elmer agrees and performs a number of ridiculous good deeds, such as giving his underwear to a needy man on the street.
In Hare Do, Bugs Bunny gets into another predicament with Elmer Fudd. This time, Elmer has become a doctor and is trying to cure Bugs of a "rare disease" called "rabbitsitis."
In typical Looney Tunes fashion, Bugs plays along with Elmer's delusions and convinces him to try all sorts of ridiculous cures. He's fed a bowl of carrots, gets hot mustard rubbed on his feet, and is even subjected to an "X-ray" that causes him to light up like a Christmas tree.
But when Bugs figures out that the real reason Elmer became a doctor was to get close to the pretty nurse in his office, he decides to take matters into his own hands. He dons a wig and a dress and pretends to be the nurse, effectively stealing her away from Elmer.
In the end, Elmer is left heartbroken and Bugs triumphs once again.
Overall, Hare Conditioned / Hare Do exemplify the classic Looney Tunes formula: silly antics, witty banter, and clever pranks. These episodes are a perfect introduction to the iconic characters of Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd, and their timeless, hilarious rivalry.
