However, he's caught by the butcher and chased out of the store.

Desperate for food, Charlie wanders into a house where he smells delicious food cooking. He sneaks into the kitchen and devours the meal, but is caught by the house cat. The cat is outraged and decides to teach Charlie a lesson. He tricks the dog into thinking he's now his friend and offers him a job as a mouse-catcher. Charlie eagerly accepts the job and begins his new career in pest control.

However, his hunger soon gets the best of him once again. He tries to catch the mice, but ends up eating them instead. The cat is furious and decides to get rid of Charlie. He tricks him into going to the dog pound where he'll be safe and fed. However, once Charlie arrives at the pound, he realizes it's not the paradise he was promised. The other dogs bully him and the food is terrible.

Charlie decides he needs to escape and return to his old life on the streets. He teams up with a crafty cat who helps him sneak past the other dogs and out of the pound. However, once they're out, Charlie realizes he still has nowhere to go and nothing to eat. He and the cat come up with a plan to sneak into the meat market again and steal some food.

Their plan works, but they're caught by the butcher. He chases them out of the store and across town, but they eventually escape. Charlie and the cat are now free and have all the food they could want. They celebrate by eating and dancing in the street, much to the amusement of the other animals.
