- April 15, 1950
The Hypo-Chondri-Cat, which aired as the ninth episode of the 1950 season of Looney Tunes, is an iconic cartoon short featuring the beloved character Sylvester the Cat. The episode follows Sylvester as he convinces himself that he is gravely ill, specifically suffering from maladies such as Athritis, Appendicitis, Tonsilitis, and Ammonia.
The cartoon opens with Sylvester walking down the street under a dark and ominous sky, his face full of concern. He spots a billboard announcing "Dr. Jerkyl's Clinic—Guaranteed Healthy in Three Days", and immediately makes his way inside. Once there, he proceeds to describe his symptoms to Dr. Jerkyl, who hardly pays him any attention, instead serving himself a sandwich while Sylvester anxiously awaits a diagnosis.
When he finally does examine Sylvester, Dr. Jerkyl appears to find nothing wrong with him, which only fuels Sylvester's anxiety and imaginations. Deciding that he needs further help, Sylvester seeks out his friend and fellow feline, Porky Pig, who offers him some pills to help him feel better. Sylvester swallows the pills whole, which only lead to him having a hallucinatory experience that makes him "diagnose" himself with a variety of other illnesses.
In an effort to take control of his failing health, Sylvester decides to cure himself by eating a canary, which he mistakes for a can of "Annery Seeds". However, things go awry when Tweety Bird, the aforementioned canary, hilariously outsmarts Sylvester, making him the butt of another one of his pranks.
The episode reaches a climactic conclusion when Sylvester finds himself trapped in a house with Tweety, convinced that the canary is the one who will ultimately be the cause of his demise. In his hilarious attempt to catch Tweety, Sylvester uses many props and devices that lead to a series of hilarious hijinks and laugh-out-loud moments.
