Lodge 49 is an American comedy-drama television series that premiered on AMC in 2018. The show was created by Jim Gavin, who also wrote the novel on which the series is based, and it stars Wyatt Russell, Sonya Cassidy, and Brent Jennings, among others. In the second season of the show, Jacquie Barnbrook joined the cast in a recurring role.
The series is set in Long Beach, California, and follows the life of a likable and optimistic ex-surfer named Sean "Dud" Dudley (played by Russell). After the death of his father and the collapse of his family's pool supply business, Dud is left aimless and adrift. When he stumbles upon a mysterious fraternal order known as the Lynx, he becomes obsessed with joining and finding purpose in his life.
At the heart of the show is the Lodge, a failing fraternal order that claims to be a "long-standing spiritual tradition" but is really just a motley crew of oddballs and misfits. Led by the avuncular Ernie (played by Jennings), the members of the Lodge spend their days drinking beer, playing shuffleboard, and discussing the enigmatic symbols and esoteric teachings of their organization.
As Dud becomes increasingly involved with the Lodge, he also becomes entangled in the lives of its members, including the beautiful and enigmatic waitress Liz (played by Cassidy), her volatile boyfriend and Lodge member, the more traditionalist Scott (played by Eric Allan Kramer), and the Lodge's reclusive founder, known only as "the True Lodge Master" (played by Kenneth Welsh).
Throughout the show's two seasons, Lodge 49 explores a variety of themes, from the search for purpose and meaning in life to the power of community and the meaning of friendship. The series is anchored by the charming and endearing performance of Russell as Dud, who manages to remain optimistic and lovable even in the face of disappointment and failure.
One of the standout features of Lodge 49 is its quirky and offbeat sense of humor, which is a blend of dry wit, absurdist comedy, and moments of heartfelt emotion. The show also boasts a distinctive visual style, with a warm and golden color palette that captures the faded glamour of Long Beach and the Lodge itself.
Jacquie Barnbrook joined the cast of Lodge 49 in the show's second season, in a recurring role as Joanne, a psychic who becomes a confidante and mentor to Liz. Though her role is relatively small, Barnbrook delivers an engaging and memorable performance, imbuing Joanne with a sense of otherworldliness and a wry sense of humor.
Overall, Lodge 49 is an engaging and enjoyable series that offers a unique blend of comedy, drama, and mysticism. Its lovable characters, witty writing, and distinctive style make it a standout show that is well worth a watch.
Lodge 49 is a series that ran for 2 seasons (20 episodes) between August 6, 2018 and on AMC
