The show Little Women, based on the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott, begins with season 1 episode 1 titled "Part 1." This episode introduces the four March sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy – and their mother Marmee, who are struggling to make ends meet while their father is away fighting in the Civil War.
The episode opens with the girls discussing their Christmas plans, with Meg dreaming of attending a fancy party while Jo and Amy wish for new clothes. However, their plans are put on hold as Marmee receives a letter informing her that their father is extremely ill and she must go to Washington to tend to him. The sisters are devastated at the news, but Marmee informs them that they must be strong and take care of each other while she's away.
As the days go by, the girls try to keep themselves occupied. Meg is invited to the fancy party but soon realizes that she's out of place among the wealthy guests. Jo, who dreams of becoming a writer, spends her time reading and writing stories. Beth, the gentle and shy sister, plays her piano and spends time with the family's kind neighbor Mr. Laurence. And Amy, the youngest and most impulsive sister, tries to paint a picture of herself but realizes that she doesn't have the skill.
The episode also introduces Laurie, Mr. Laurence's grandson who becomes intrigued by the March sisters. He and Jo have a particularly interesting conversation about their aspirations and he encourages her to follow her dreams of becoming a writer.
As the days turn into weeks, the girls begin to realize how much they miss their mother and worry about their father's health.
