Laura, Almanzo, and their daughter Rose travel to a mining town in Arizona where Almanzo has a job opportunity. They arrive to find a town in disarray, with many of the residents, including children, suffering from lead poisoning due to the mining operations. Laura and Almanzo become determined to find a way to help the sick children and their families, despite facing opposition from the apathetic townspeople and the mining company. Meanwhile, back in Walnut Grove, Charles and Caroline struggle with the decision to send their son Jeb away to a school for the deaf where he can receive specialized education and support. As they weigh their options, they grapple with their own conflicting emotions and worries about what is best for their child. The Lost Ones (1) sets the stage for a multi-episode arc that explores themes of family, community, and perseverance in the face of adversity.
