Laura is excited when her old friend Annabelle comes to visit Walnut Grove. The two girls used to be inseparable before Annabelle moved away, but when they are reunited, Laura quickly realizes that Annabelle has changed. Annabelle is now vain and materialistic, with a newfound love for fanciness and luxury.
Laura is disappointed and angry at her friend, but Annabelle seems to be unaware of the change in their relationship. She continues to act as though nothing has changed and insists on showing Laura her new clothes and jewelry. Laura tries to be supportive but can't help feeling disapproving of her friend's new attitude.
Meanwhile, Annabelle's father has come to town to buy supplies for their farm. He is struggling financially and can't afford to buy everything that Annabelle wants. Annabelle becomes increasingly upset and keeps insisting that she needs to have the latest fashions and accessories.
Frustrated with her friend's behavior, Laura tries to reason with Annabelle and convince her that her appearance and possessions don't define who she is as a person. But Annabelle won't listen and becomes even more selfish and demanding.
Things come to a head when Annabelle's father is robbed while in town. He loses all of his money and can't afford to buy the supplies they need. Annabelle is devastated and angry that she won't be able to get everything she wants.
With her father's farm in jeopardy, Annabelle finally starts to realize the error of her ways. She apologizes to Laura for her behavior and expresses regret for her materialistic attitude. Together, Laura and Annabelle come up with a plan to help Annabelle's family get back on their feet.
In the end, Annabelle learns a valuable lesson about the importance of friendship and the dangers of focusing too much on material possessions. She and Laura reconcile their friendship and Annabelle leaves Walnut Grove a changed person.
