In Minneapolis, Laura and Almanzo finally find a small house to rent and Almanzo starts working at a local mill. However, they quickly realize that city life isn't as glamorous as they had imagined. They struggle to make ends meet and deal with the noise and crowds of the city.
Back in Walnut Grove, Charles receives a letter from Laura that reveals some of the challenges they are facing in the city. He decides to travel to Minneapolis to help them out. When he arrives, he sees how difficult things have been for them and decides to stay and help them settle in.
Together, the three of them work to improve their situation. They start a new business selling dairy products, which proves to be successful. Laura and Almanzo also begin to make new friends and feel more at home in the city.
