Laura Ingalls is happily preparing for her graduation from Walnut Grove School. She has worked hard and earned the highest grades in the school, but just as she is about to receive her diploma, she learns that her cousin, Lena, is very sick with scarlet fever. The news comes as a shock to everyone, especially Laura. Nellie Oleson, who has been tormenting Laura throughout the school year, does not believe Laura's story and spreads rumors about her in front of the whole school. Feeling humiliated, Laura decides to quit school and go home to help care for Lena.
Ma and Pa Ingalls do not want Laura to leave school, but they agree to let her go, as long as she makes sure she knows all the subjects she needs to pass the county exams. Laura struggles with the thought of leaving her friends and the academics behind. But, thanks to Mary's encouragement and persistence, she decides not to give up on her dreams of becoming a schoolteacher, and sets out to study on her own.
Meanwhile, Charles travels to Mankato to get supplies for the farm and meets John Carter, an old friend of his. John tells Charles about his recent troubles with the law and how he is now a fugitive, running from the law. Charles offers to help John, but he is hesitant to accept, knowing that he may put Charles and his family in danger. However, he eventually agrees to let Charles help him because he trusts him.
As Laura struggles with her schoolwork, her cousin's health deteriorates. Until finally, Lena dies, leaving Laura heartbroken. Laura returns to school, determined to finish what she started. She passes her county exams, and Charles returns with good news. John has turned himself in and will soon be released from jail, and they are going to have a party to celebrate. The school teacher, Mrs. Beadle, lets Laura deliver the good news to the school, and Laura speaks about never giving up on your dreams, no matter how hard it may seem.
